The SW-51 truly feels like a fighter. It is the most intuitive aircraft next to the F-16 I have ever flown.
This plane so much fun! It is meticulously built and a functional piece of art.
If I had to choose one aircraft for my personal use of the 175 types I have flown, the SW-51 would be the one.
I’m looking forward to owning a Mustang that merely requires a pre-flight, is easy to push-out, and doesn’t require extensive maintenance between flights. I bet my hours in the SW-51 will rapidly outpace those I could achieve in any other Mustang.
This is my second airplane build. The beautifully packaged kit was like my Christmas present when it arrived. The quality is superb, and the people in Poland are artisans.
This airplane is a joy—the control forces are light but not twitchy, and the harmony is almost perfect. I will note that I have flown other warbird replicas with surprising handling characteristics in the stall or with slips because the airfoil didn’t scale well. Or maybe it did—fighters are built to be weapons platforms, not to be easy to stall. But the SW-51 is a pussycat in the slow-speed regime.
These guys are doing it right. The factory crew was awesome, and I can’t say enough good about the building experience in Poland and the quality of work.
In the scale replica world, it’s all about percentages. An SW-51 can be acquired for about 10 percent of the cost of a real P-51. The real kicker is you can operate an SW-51 for less than 5 percent of the operating costs of a real Mustang while enjoying 90 per- cent of the fun. (Okay, I made the fun percentage up, but it’s probably close.)
It’s likely anyone building an SW-51 will be creating a pure-fun machine but it is not without good performance. That the SW-51 flies well may be incidental to the insta-crowds that it’ll engender, but its performance, feel and attitude are a fitting tribute to arguably the greatest fighter of WW-II.
My wife asked me why I ordered an SW-51 even though I had a plane. I told her it’s like having a Harley-Davidson for the air. She got it!
I have flown a Pitts for 20 years, and that was fun. But I think the SW-51 is even more fun!
The SW-51 is 70 percent the size of a P-51, but only 16 percent of the weight. This means performance. The roll rate and elevator authority make the SW-51 fly like the subscale fighter it is. Scaled from arguably the best fighter ever built, the fact it can turn, roll, loop, and dive with grace is no big shocker.
This beautiful airplane is a meticulously built and functional piece of art, but let’s not forget that the SW-51 Mustang is a modern tribute to an incredible piece of history. It’s also insanely cool.
ScaleWings performed an incredible re-creation of the P-51 Mustang with exceptional engineering, craftsmanship, and art! After having flown the SW-51, I couldn’t be more revved up about how it performed and handled compared to the plethora of aircraft that fill my logbooks. I immediately knew an order would have my name on it!
The airplane you have created is the answer to my dreams—dreams that I have had since I was a young boy, dreams that I have worked every day to try to achieve, dreams that, at my age, I was starting to believe were unattainable in my lifetime. That is until the SW-51! The SW-51 has given me hope and belief once again in my dreams.
