F7F-3 Tigercat
The prototype XF7F-1 was ordered by the US
Navy on May 30, 1941 and had its maiden flight in October of 1943. After
several minor improvements on the airframe, it went into series
production as the F7F-1 in April of 1944.
Intensive training of carrier take-offs and landings followed, during
which the handling, cockpit layout and good performance of the aircraft,
in comparison to the Corsair, were praised by the pilots. 500 units were
built of the F7F-1.
Further improvement of the design consisted on increasing engine power,
incorporating thicker aluminum sheet metal on the upper wing skins, and
increasing the area of the vertical stabilizer. This was then named the
F7F-3, of which 250 units were built. At the end of WWII, in which the
F7F played only a minor role, existing F7F-2 were converted to F7F-2D
models.
Armament on almost all units consisted of 4 50 cal. MG’s in the fuselage
nose. On the center station, beneath the fuselage, a 2000lb. Bomb could
be carried, and on the outer wing stations usually AR or HVAR rockets
were carried. Additionally, 4 20mm MG’s were installed in the wings.

| F7F-3 Tigercat |
Our model of the Tigercat maintains the original’s character. All panel joints and details are incorporated in the molds, and appear clearly on the molded parts, due to the meticulous hand laminating technique applied.
All larger parts, such as wings, fuselage, etc. are constructed as a glassfiber/Herex-sandwich, reinforced with carbon fiber where necessary. This assures low weight combined with high structural integrity.
All flight control surfaces are also all composite. Bulkhead, ribs, formers, joiner systems, servo trays, support structures for landing gear, engines, fuel tanks, etc. are built into the individual components, when they are built in the mold.
Since the whole model is completely pre-fabricated, and joiner systems, etc. are also incorporated, wing dihedral, longitudinal dihedral, engine down-and side thrust are already set and require no further adjustment.
Due to this high amount of pre-fabrication, the Tigercat can be ready to fly in a relatively short period of time.
The building instructions come in the form of a CD-ROM, with numerous pictures of the different build stages, which of course can always be printed out, if so required.
The Tigercat is designed to have an AUW of 22-25kgs (48-55 lbs)
We recommend using two engines with 35-50 cc displacement each and 2 60cc engines as a maximum.
The Tigercat breaks down into several pieces, so that it can easily be transported in a medium sized sedan or wagon.
At the field, the Tigercat is quickly assembled from the 2 fuselage halves, wing center section, 2 engine pylons, the 2 outer wing panels, and the 2 horizontal stabilizer halves.
Project status: in production
