North American
B-25 Mitchell
The first prototype, designated NA-40,
flew in January of 1939. It was followed by 24 B-25 models, which were
used for testing purposes. The first variant in service was the B-25A,
of which 40 units were built. From there on, the production numbers
increased steeply : 119 units of the B-25B, with gun turrets on top and
below the fuselage ; 1.619 units of the B-25C, with different power
plants and hard points for bombs on the wings; 2.290 units of the
basically identical B-25D; 405 units of the B-25G , with a 75mm cannon
in the nose; 1.000 units of the B-25H, with different armament, and no
turret on top of the fuselage; and 4.318 units of the B-25J, with hard
points for heavy bombs, and 8 heavy MG’s in the fuselage nose. Apart
from this, a few different test models were built.
