It’s first flight, as the XP-38, was in January 1939. From the YP-38 (13 units) and P-38a (30 units) the first units for combat duty were developed: the P-38D (36 units) and the P-38E (210 units) equipped with 4 MG’ in the nose, and a 37mm or 20mm cannon, respectively. After that, production was switched to the more powerful P-38G (1.082 units) with hard points for bombs, up to 901kgs (1980 lbs), and the P-38H (601 units), with improved supercharger. The P-38J (2.970 units) among other improvements, had better engine cooling, and, in the last 1400 units increased fuel capacity. The P-38L (3.943 units) featured increased engine power, as well as the option of being equipped with rockets on the wing stations. The 2 seater P-38M night fighters were reconditioned P-38Ls
