Boeing B-17
Flying Fortress
The B-17, a heavy high-altitude bomber,
had its maiden flight in July of 1935 as the model 299 (unofficially
XB-17). 13 Y1B-17-(B-17) one Y1B-17A-(B-17-A)-pre-series aircraft, as
well as a small number of B-17B’s, B-17-C’s and B-17D’s followed for
testing purposes. The first model to see active duty was the B-17E which
incorporated the shape of the tail used by all later versions, and
improved defensive armament (one 7,62-mm-MG and twelve 12,7-mm-MGs). 512
B-17E’s were built. The B-17F followed, which varied from the E model
only in the nose canopy, which was framed, instead of being a bubble
canopy. 3045 F models were built. Afterwards, 8.680 model B-17G’s
followed. In the G model, defensive capability had been further improved,
y incorporating a new chin turret, staggering the turrets on top of the
fuselage, improved tail gun, and the ability to carry more additional
ammunition.
